Packing the instruments

It’s a huge logistical task for an orchestra to go on tour. Today, after two days of rehearsals at the Sydney Opera House, it was time for the 95 Sydney Symphony musicians to say goodbye to their instruments as they were packed and readied for their trip to Sydney Airport.

The instruments used by Sydney Symphony are extremely precious, not just in monetary terms but on a personal level. As one violinist put it as she packed her instrument into a case: “goodbye little one. I’ll see you soon”.

There is $6.2 million worth of instruments being sent by freight to Asia, equating to 50 cubic metres of instruments or the equivalent of a 48 foot semi-trailer - too much to fit in the cargo of 1 Boeing 747!
