Sydney Symphony 2008 Italy Tour

The Sydney Symphony’s Italy tour represented the culmination of Maestro Gianluigi Gelmetti’s five years as the Orchestra’s Chief Conductor and Artistic Director.

The tour saw a full-strength Sydney Symphony of 92 musicians performing 8 concerts over 11 days at some of Italy’s most prestigious festivals and performance centres.

Italy Tour Program

During the 2008 Italy Tour, the Sydney Symphony performed a range of major orchestral works.

  • RAVEL, including La Valse, Le Tombeau de Couperin, Pavane pour une infante défunte and Bolero.

    This program documented Maestro Gelmetti’s special relationship with, and expertise for, the music of this French master and reflected a two-week project on Ravel that featured prominently in the 2008 Sydney Symphony season.
  • BEETHOVEN, Symphony No.7
  • LIM, The Compass

This work by contemporary Australian composer Liza Lim, was commissioned from the Sydney Symphony’s recent Composer-in-Residence, Australian Liza Lim (born in 1966 in Perth, Australia). The work featured a Didgeridoo solo performance by outstanding Australian indigenous musician William Barton.
