Josephine Allan: Principal Piano
Josephine Allan studied in Canberra with Anne Thompson, John Winther and Larry Sitsky before moving to Sydney to undertake postgraduate study with David Miller and Nikolai Evrov.
In addition to her work with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, she has also performed with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Australia Ensemble, Song Company, Cantillation, Seymour Group, Alpha Ensemble, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. In 2004, she performed the Mozart Concerto for two pianos with Daniel Herscovitch in the SSO’s Mozart Series.
In 1991, she was invited to participate in Leonard Bernstein’s Sapporo Music Festival in Japan, where she worked with Christoph Eschenbach, Michael Tilson Thomas, Christa Ludwig, Arleen Auger, and members of the Berlin Philharmonic and Houston Symphony orchestras.
Her many recordings include several CDs of Australian music with clarinettist Phillipa Robinson, as well as frequent broadcasts for ABC Classic FM. She is also featured on recordings by Sinfonia Australis and Alpha Ensemble, and on the soundtrack to Sydney: A Story of a City.
Josephine Allan regularly appears at the annual Coriole Music Festival in Maclaren Vale, South Australia, performing with artists such as Elizabeth Campbell, John Pringle, Michael Lewis, Nicole Youl, Paul Wright, Janis Laurs, Catherine McCorkill, Julian Smiles, Dimity Hall, the Australian String Quartet and the Adelaide a cappella group Syntony.
She combines a busy performing career with her position as Associate Lecturer in Ensemble Studies at the Sydney Conservatorium.
