Sydney Symphony Sinfonia

Richard Gill, Artistic Director

Australia's national professional training program.

“Mentors…lead us along the journey of our lives. We trust them because they have been there before. They embody our hopes, cast light on the way ahead, interpret arcane signs, warn us of lurking dangers and point out unexpected delights along the way. There is a certain luminosity about them, and they often pose as magicians in tales of transformation.” - L.A.Daloz in ‘Education as a transformational journey’, 2003

Sydney Symphony Sinfonia is a professional, part-time mentoring orchestra for musicians-in-training. Selected from a competitive national field, Sinfonia members have an opportunity to play alongside Sydney Symphony musicians in rehearsal and performance, including concerts for the Sydney Symphony Education Program. The program also includes regional touring, industry workshops and repertoire reading sessions with visiting international conductors.

For 15 years now, the Sydney Symphony Sinfonia has developed a tradition of training young orchestral musicians, and a culture of mentoring amongst the musicians of the Sydney Symphony. Find out more about Sydney Symphony Sinfonia the past 15 years.

A NATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM
The Sydney Symphony is committed to ensuring the best young musicians from every state of Australia are able to access the unique professional training that the Sinfonia offers.

**New in 2012** interstate participants will be offered substantially increased funding to subsidise their travel and accommodation. Subsidies will range between $200 and $400, subject to the length of the Sinfonia session. Discount accommodation is available through a leading hostel partner.

A PROFESSIONAL TRAINING EXPERIENCE
The Sydney Symphony Sinfonia is Australia’s leading professional training opportunity for emerging orchestral musicians. Participants receive an honorarium for performance calls, which in 2012 will increase by 50% to $120 per call. Click here for a complete list of benefits.

SIDE-BY-SIDE WITH THE SYDNEY SYMPHONY
Continuing in 2012 is the opportunity to play in a Side-by-Side concert program, as part of a main-stage Sydney Symphony performance in the Sydney Opera House or on a regional tour. Successful applicants will be considered for this advanced opportunity when auditioning.

DISCOVERY
Richard Gill leads this series of musical lectures featuring the Sydney Symphony Sinfonia, with performances on Monday and Tuesday evenings at Sydney's City Recital Hall Angel Place and in outer metropolitan centres throughout Sydney. The concerts attract capacity subscriber audiences and are always very entertaining and informative as Richard “unpacks” the music in ways that leave both audience and experienced musicians inspired. Find out more about the Discovery concerts for 2012.

SCHOOLS CONCERTS
The Sydney Symphony Sinfonia performs for thousands of school children each year, under the direction of experienced conductors and presenters. These concerts (usually over the course of a week) offer musicians the chance to focus intently on the repertoire being performed, while performing to one of our most important audiences. All players rotate through parts and desks, to ensure as broad an experience of the work as possible.

In 2012 these weeks will all include repertoire reading sessions, where the ensemble will rehearse important foundation orchestral works by composers such as Mozart, Brahms, Dvorák and Shostakovich, alongside their Sydney Symphony mentors. Find out more about our 2012 Schools' Concerts.

SINFONIETTA COMPOSITION PROJECT
The Sinfonietta Composition Project was devised for gifted senior high school music students who like to compose. At the same time it provides an opportunity for a select group of Sydney Symphony Sinfonia and Fellowship participants to work on contemporary composition. Through this project we aim to encourage collaboration between performers and composers. The project is directed by Richard Gill and guided by Sydney Symphony mentors. Sydney Symphony Sinfonia - The first 15 years

Sydney Symphony Sinfonia Alumni Survey

During my three years with the Sinfonia I received invaluable mentoring from the cellists of the SSO, as well as from other players, conductors and staff. The Sinfonia also helped open the door to casual work and a Fellowship with the orchestra, and other professional engagements. The relationships which developed with SSO players and other Sinfonia members continue to be incredibly valuable. I believe the Sydney Sinfonia is the highest level of tertiary orchestral training available to students in Australia and New Zealand, and should be a goal for any students seeking an orchestral career.
- Patrick Suthers, Associate Principal Cello, Queensland Symphony Orchestra
Sinfonia 2004, 2006, 2007. Fellowship 2008

The Sinfonia has been an essential element of my preparation for professional orchestral work. It has given me the opportunity to work with and learn from amazing tutors in a high quality orchestra. The excellent conductors combined with the diversity of repertoire covered by the orchestra have helped to make the Sydney Sinfonia an incredibly invaluable experience.
- Katy Hermann, Sinfonia 2006–2008
