Sydney Symphony Sinfonia Message from Richard Gill
Artistic Director, Sydney Sinfonia & Sydney Symphony Education Program
Welcome to the 17th year of the Sydney Sinfonia; in other words our 16th birthday. More than 500 musicians such as you have participated in the Sydney Sinfonia since 1996 and many of them now find themselves in full-time employment as professional orchestral musicians here and in other parts of the world. This year we are auditioning players for the 2012 Sinfonia and the 2012 Fellowship Program simultaneously so you can apply for both in the one audition.
Also in 2012, the Sydney Symphony is providing added support for interstate participants, with a substantially increased travel and accommodation subsidy paid to those who travel to participate in our program. Sinfonia musicians will perform in our new series of family concerts, as well as having the opportunity to perform in a Side-by-Side concert with the Sydney Symphony, the Discovery series and a regional tour.
Sydney Sinfonia is a professional mentoring orchestra, providing a level of experience beyond training orchestras and tertiary study. To this end, in 2012 we are increasing the honorarium received by participants, from $80 to $120 per call.
The Sinfonia is supported by a dedicated group of players from the Sydney Symphony who take their jobs as mentors very seriously. They are interested in how you play and what your strengths are. They are also interested in helping you achieve your goals. They are there to help and assist you and will expect you to engage them in questions about the music.
Consider very seriously auditioning for the Sinfonia and Fellowship programs, both of which act as a nexus between study and the profession. There are not many opportunities of this kind in Australia and the Sydney Symphony’s Sinfonia and Fellowship programs have a proven track record of developing young musicians.
We are very interested in meeting you, we are very interested in hearing you play and we are very keen to give you an opportunity to contribute to Australia’s musical life. Best wishes with your work and start preparing your audition excerpts now.
