THE NATION'S LEADING ORCHESTRA, TRAINING THE MUSICIANS OF THE FUTURE

Mentors…lead us along the journey of our lives. We trust them because they have been there before. They embody our hopes, cast light on the way ahead, interpret arcane signs, warn us of lurking dangers and point out unexpected delights along the way. There is a certain luminosity about them, and they often pose as magicians in tales of transformation.
- L.A.Daloz in ‘Education as a transformational journey’, 2003

The Sydney Symphony strives to enrich its future, and the future of young musicians, by selecting emerging young professional orchestral players to join its internationally recognised mentoring program.

The Sydney Sinfonia has developed a tradition of training young orchestral musicians, and a culture of mentoring amongst the musicians of the Sydney Symphony. For 15 years now, the Sydney Sinfonia training and mentoring orchestra has given outstanding emerging professionals invaluable experience working alongside accomplished musicians as part of a performing orchestra. Many former members have achieved positions in professional orchestras around the world.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to:

• Perform alongside Sydney Symphony musicians and other outstanding young talents nationwide, as part of a professional orchestra;
• Receive mentoring from Australia’s top professional musicians and learn orchestral techniques and philosophies;
• Participation in masterclasses with visiting Sydney Symphony conductors;
• build skills in sight reading and ensemble playing;
• experience a range of repertoire and breadth of orchestral styles.
• Receive complimentary tickets to Sydney Symphony concerts (on request and subject to availability);
• Be paid a fee of $80 per call. In addition, all participants from outside of NSW will receive $100 to assist with travelling expenses for each Sydney Sinfonia concert project.

Sinfonia Alumni

During my three years with the Sinfonia I received invaluable mentoring from the cellists of the SSO, as well as from other players, conductors and staff. The Sinfonia also helped open the door to casual work and a Fellowship with the orchestra, and other professional engagements. The relationships which developed with SSO players and other Sinfonia members continue to be incredibly valuable. I believe the Sydney Sinfonia is the highest level of tertiary orchestral training available to students in Australia and New Zealand, and should be a goal for any students seeking an orchestral career.

The Sinfonia has been an essential element of my preparation for professional orchestral work. It has given me the opportunity to work with and learn from amazing tutors in a high quality orchestra. The excellent conductors combined with the diversity of repertoire covered by the orchestra have helped to make the Sydney Sinfonia an incredibly invaluable experience.
