Teaching Composition

Sinfonietta Composition Project

This is a national composition project open to all Australian high school students, and is proving effective in finding and nurturing gifted young composers.

Each year, the program’s Artistic Director, Richard Gill, selects a model work or composition focus from which students may gain inspiration and insight for their own compositions. Successful applicants come to Sydney for 3 days and have their compositions workshopped by Richard Gill and the Sydney Symphony Sinfonia culminating in a public workshop. The Sinfonietta Composition project opens up a world of opportunity and perspective for young composers.

SUPPORT FOR TEACHING COMPOSITION IN THE CLASSROOM
The Sydney Symphony Education Program produce a comprehensive study kit on the model work or composition focus each year and offer free accredited professional development seminars to further unpack the teaching resource and the activities within.

In 2012 the composition focus is How to Write Counterpoint – activities inspired by Bach’s Musical Offering and the related Professional Learning seminars will be held in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Hobart.
