The Flying Dutchman

Opera in the Concert Hall

Wagner 200
David Robertson conducts
Date Mon 22 Jul Venue Sydney Opera House
Duration 2 hours 15 mins (no interval)

The drama and spectacle of opera comes to the Concert Hall when David Robertson conducts Wagner's first great opera, The Flying Dutchman.

In another century, the Flying Dutchman took the Devil's name in vain, and now he's doomed to sail the seas, allowed ashore once every seven years to search for the woman who will be his salvation. Meanwhile, by the Norwegian fjords, Senta dreams that she will be the one to liberate the legendary (ghostly?) Dutchman. It's a tale of obsession, sacrifice and redemption. And zombies.

American bass-baritone Eric Owens sings with a 'mastery that would be at home in any Wagnerian golden age'. Making his Australian debut as the Dutchman, he heads a cast of powerful and radiant voices that will bring this Romantic psychodrama to life. The Concert Hall itself will be draped in the inspired and fluid illusions of video and projections designer, S. Katy Tucker.
