London Calling

A concert of English music featuring Vaughan Williams, in tribute to the late Richard Hickox.

When we launched the 2009 season we had programmed a long-overdue celebration of the music of Vaughan Williams, to be conducted by Richard Hickox. Sadly, Hickox passed away late last year, an untimely loss to the musical world. In place of the original program we present a tribute, to be conducted by Mark Wigglesworth and retaining its English flavour.

The orchestra frames the program with Britten’s ‘requiem symphony’ and Elgar’s uplifting and tender In the South. Vaughan Williams is represented by three of his most lyrical works, The Lark Ascending, to be played by Concertmaster Michael Dauth; Flos campi, featuring Roger Benedict (pictured) as viola soloist and the Cantillation chorus; and the Serenade to Music for voices and orchestra, with words drawn from Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice.

‘Such harmony is in immortal souls.’
