Words from a Patron

Penny Edwards

Penny Edwards has been a long term subscriber to the Sydney Symphony, and since 2005 has become a custodian of the Symphony’s Fellowship program, annually supporting a violin Fellowship position. Penny shared what being a patron of the Sydney Symphony means to her…

How is it possible to record in one or two paragraphs my thoughts on our Sydney Symphony that, in so many ways, is involved in bringing the world of symphony and allied music into the lives of so many people who benefit from childhood into their adult years.

As we see our Sydney Symphony musicians come on stage at our world renowned Sydney Opera House, let us be aware that their stages may range from a children’s hospital ward to far-flung townships that have acknowledged their delighted appreciation of our Fellow’s Chamber Music Concerts – to Chamber Music in the historic Saint James Church – to the open air performances for young children and their parents.

Now on to the stage at the Eugene Goossens Hall where, every year, the Sydney Symphony’s Sinfonia, with the inimitable Richard Gill OAM and hundreds of school children perennially and enthusiastically taking part in the programmes at appropriate levels each year. Finally, to the Sydney Symphony’s financially limited visits to historic stages overseas where the Sydney Symphony is recognised as a world class orchestra.

All this and more cannot be accomplished without financial help.

Since education has been my life, I first elected to support, in general, the Sydney Symphony’s Education Programme and now, Specifically that of the “Fellows”.

My life has been enriched not only by contact with a most remarkable, small group of highly qualified members of the education team, working together with both Richard Gill OAM  and Roger Benedict, Fellowship Program Artistic Director, Principal Viola and world known as an educator, but also by a new awareness of the life-changing directions and opportunities that are much appreciated by all the young participants of the Fellowship Programme among others.

And now to Rory Jeffes, Managing Director of the Sydney Symphony and therefore regulator of the multiple activities of the Sydney Symphony.
