David Barlow

David Barlow was inspired by the sound of the double bass after attending a concert in his home town of Newcastle. Then, aged 16, he switched from bass guitar to double bass. David studied with Kees Boersma at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (2014-17), and with Prof. Alois Posch at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (2017). In 2018, David moved to Melbourne to attend the Australian National Academy of Music, studying with Damien Eckersley.

David has played with the Melbourne and Tasmanian symphony orchestras and the Australian Youth Orchestra. He was the winner of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Double Bass Competition in 2018. David also received the Musica Viva prize in the ANAM Chamber Competition with his group’s performance of Prokofiev’s Oboe Quintet in G minor.
