Sydney-born clarinettist James Julian grew up entranced by the sounds of orchestral music. At the age of 14 he began playing with the Australian Youth Orchestra and Sydney Youth Orchestras. Since 2016, James has freelanced with the Opera Australia Orchestra and with the Auckland Philharmonia since 2018.
James studies with Francesco Celata at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Highlights at the Sydney Conservatorium include winning the 2016 Clarinet Competition and performing in a masterclass with renowned clarinet virtuoso Sabine Meyer in 2018. As a member of Quintet Vivo, James was awarded a 2018 Henderson Travellers scholarship to study wind quintet repertoire in Europe.
