Ashkenazy on Shostakovich

Vladimir Ashkenazy talks about the finale of Shostakovich’s famous Symphony No.5.

After Shostakovich fell out of favour with the Soviet authorities,  it was the bravely epic Fifth Symphony – tagged 'A Soviet Artist's Reply to Just Criticism' – that restored him to (precarious) favour. Here Vladimir Ashkenazy discusses the real meaning behind the finale.

See Vladimir Ashkenazy conduct the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in Dramatic Shostakovich and Gripping Shostakovich at the Sydney Opera House this November.
