Katie Noonan talks about her latest collaboration

Over a cup of tea singer-songwriter Katie Noonan and Australia’s ‘poet laureate’ Michael Leunig decided they needed to work together.

Some years later the result is Gratitude and Grief, a performance featuring Leunig drawing live to a musical interpretation of his poetry by Noonan and her trio Elixir. Leunig’s drawings will be projected on a screen behind our orchestra, which together with the band will take the audience on a soaring journey through two themes that are common to every human experience.

Speaking about working with the artist-poet, Noonan says “Michael Leunig brings us solace – his words and images are profoundly beautiful and contemplative and give us a sense of stillness and peace.

“With the music we make in Elixir, I felt his words would be the perfect fit for our similarly contemplative and intimate world. Thankfully it has been a match made in heaven and a delight working with such an awesome human and wordsmith.”

See Katie Noonan's Elixir live with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra from 2–4 November.
