This year, fifty primary school teachers from six selected schools joined us for our annual teacher-training course, TunED-Up!.

This year, fifty primary school teachers from six selected schools joined us for our annual teacher-training course, TunED-Up!.

The flagship professional development program launched for 2019 on 14 January. The five-day intensive program featured practical approaches to classroom music, singing and teacher-collaboration. The program is specially designed for primary classroom teachers who have little or no musical experience.

Participant teachers were challenged from Day 1! They learned to play simple note progressions on xylophones and recorded an individual journal on iPads.

Participants learnt songs as a group using the same techniques they’ll take back to their students. Fun tip! Forming circles is a great way to help groups maintain parts and sing in harmony.

GarageBand has great visual features to help teachers explore textures of sound in composition.

Participants learned to play the xylophone for accompaniment and melody as a way to create a classroom orchestra.

Music can help storytelling and literacy in the classroom. Participants helped each other to compose music and record sound effects on devices.

Watching musicians in each section of the orchestra rehearse and communicate with the conductor was a special insight into live music-making.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra sounded amazing from the very first note of their rehearsal. Teachers were impressed by the way musicians communicated with each other through eye contact and body movement.

Sitting in with the musicians during the orchestral rehearsal enabled participants to hear and see music-making from the musicians' perspective.
