A choral masterpiece by Beethoven and one of Haydn’s great London symphonies in a stirring and magnificent program.
Masaaki Suzuki, the founder of Bach Collegium Japan, made his SSO conducting debut in 2016 with Haydn’s choral masterpiece, The Creation. Now he’s back with more Haydn (one of the magnificent London symphonies) and another choral masterpiece, Beethoven’s Mass in C. The Mass was commissioned by Haydn’s patron, Prince Esterházy, who was expecting the music to sound something like Haydn. So when he heard the new piece he didn’t know what to make of it: “My dear Beethoven, what is this that you have done?” But the sincerity of expression and potent drama in Beethoven’s music have since found a place in music lovers’ hearts, and if you admire his Missa Solemnis you’ll want to hear this concert.
