Kirill Gerstein makes a triumphant return to Sydney as the featured artist of our Keys to the City Festival. He opens the festival with a fascinating recital program where his virtuosity, versatility and commanding musicianship are on full display.
With a musical upbringing swinging between the worlds of jazz and classical music, and between Russia and America, Kirill Gerstein is a versatile virtuoso. Taking the spontaneity of jazz to the classics, Gerstein has developed a style that’s energetic and emotive, earning him a reputation for unforgettable music-making. His mastery of mood and colour come to the fore in impressionistic Liszt, Janáček and Debussy. Beethoven’s riffs on a theme from his ‘Eroica’ Symphony showcase Gerstein’s in-the-moment inventiveness, while Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin offers a scintillating display and depth of feeling in equal, elegant measure.
‘‘His playing sparkles with ease and shimmers in fascinating colours...’’
