Mendelssohn's Octet. No further excuse is needed to join us for this enchanting chamber music concert performed by the strings of the SSO.
At an age when modern teenagers are learning to drive, Mendelssohn was dashing off an undisputed masterpiece. His Octet for strings is both brilliantly mature and delightfully fresh. Its mercurial 'fairy' scherzo looks forward to the music of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Absolute perfection! In this concert featuring the strings of the SSO we also play the Three Idylls of Frank Bridge - best known via his student Benjamin Britten, but worth hearing in their own right for their beauty and their sheer range of expression, from dark melancholy to tenderness, little bluesy moments and bright-eyed energy. In the middle, a witty take on a traditional Scottish folk dance.
