Mozart and Brahms

The dazzling yet intimate chamber music of Mozart and Brahms is at the heart of the repertoire, a treasure trove of trios, quartets and sonatas.

Occasionally a larger canvas creates more surprise and delight, as these two exceptional sextets show.

Brahms’ String Sextet No.1 brings the richness of extra inner voices – viola and cello – to his palette. His intricate blend of light and shade and the tension between lyricism and control are writ large.

An anonymous arranger shrank Mozart’s celebrated Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola into the more portable form of this Grand Sestetto and in sharing the solo lines generously among the players created more fun for everyone!
