Nelson Freire returns with Beethoven’s mighty Emperor concerto, paired with some of the best moments from Wagner’s Ring cycle.
Is there a word for this concert? “Epic” might be it. It begins with Beethoven’s final piano concerto, the majestic and radiant Emperor, and we’re thrilled that Nelson Freire will be returning to Sydney as soloist. When he recorded this concerto in 2014 he was praised for giving it a “fresh, keen atmosphere” (Financial Times) and we’re looking forward to experiencing his lucid and imaginative interpretation on the stage. The epic theme continues when Donald Runnicles, one of the great Wagnerian interpreters, conducts orchestral highlights from Wagner’s Ring cycle. From the thrilling Ride of the Valkyries to the dramatic climax of Brünnhilde’s Immolation, it’s a chance to enjoy Wagner’s magnificent orchestral writing – without the singers!
