Yuja Wang plays Beethoven
Dutoit conducts Colours of Spain

With enormous disappointment, we announce that pianist Martha Argerich has had to withdraw from her Sydney appearances on 29, 30 June and 1 July owing to illness which has prevented her travelling. In her stead, we welcome back Chinese pianist Yuja Wang, who will perform in an unchanged program conducted by Charles Dutoit.

Following her 2015 performances with the SSO and recital, Yuja Wang was described by The Australian classical music reviewer Murray Black as a “top-class virtuoso… With her glamorous stage attire, popular YouTube videos and dedicated social media following... Yuja Wang is the model of a modern classical pianist.” We are delighted that she has agreed to join us in Sydney at such short notice to perform Beethoven's spirited Piano Concerto No.1. This will be framed by the Australian premiere of Stravinsky's Funeral Song, written on the death of Rimsky-Korsakov – rediscovered in 2015 – and the high-spirited music of Falla's Three-Cornered Hat ballet. Dutoit has assembled irresistible melodies, thrilling Spanish rhythms and the intoxicating whirlwind of La Valse to show the SSO at its very best in music close to his heart.

Pre-concert talk by Scott Davie at 7.15pm in the Northern Foyer. The concert will conclude at approximately 10pm.
