Pre-Concert Talks

Before almost all of our classical performances we invite some of Australia’s greatest musical minds to discuss the music on the program.

A Sydney Symphony Orchestra talk is an ideal introduction to the concert. You can always read up in advance, you can listen to recordings – but a pre-concert talk brings words and music together for:

  • a deeper insight into the overarching themes of the concert
  • clues for how to listen during the performance
  • the perfect transition between the distractions of daily life and the intensity and focus of an orchestral concert.

For pre-concert talks at Sydney Town Hall, join us at the front of the stalls in the hall 60 minutes before the performance. For performances at City Recital Hall, pre-concert talks will take place on the first floor Reception Room 45 minutes before the performance. To find out if your concert will include a pre-concert talk, check the details on each concert page.

Sydney Symphony Orchestra speakers are a diverse bunch: performers, historians, producers, writers, composers. But they have tend to have two things in common: a profound curiosity about music, its sound and its context, and experience in music programming or the presentation of concerts.
