What to expect from the program

The program includes a stipend which covers performance calls across mainstage and chamber music performances.

You'll receive professional development in the areas of audition, rehearsal and performance preparation, stagecraft, career management as well as informed approaches to long-term health and wellbeing. The program also includes professional training and performance activities including mentoring by members of the Sydney Symphony and masterclasses with our globally renowned guest artists and soloists.

Eligibility and Requirements

The Fellowship program is a year-long commitment and successful candidates will need to be residents in Sydney during their Fellowship year. If you are intending to study, you may need to defer your studies should you audition successfully.

Applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen. Applicants must have finished high school and be no older than 29 years by 31 December 2026.

Applicants

In 2027 there will be twelve instrumental Fellowship positions available, one on each of the following instruments: Flute + Piccolo, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Lower Brass (Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone or Tuba) Violin x2, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass. Applicants must have extensive orchestral performance experience.

How to Apply

Fellowship auditions are conducted in two rounds. The first round is audition by video – YouTube, Vimeo or similar and is due by 11:59pm, Wednesday 15 April 2026. Successful candidates are invited through to the second round live auditions, to be held in Sydney between 12 June and 4 July 2026.

A current 1-page resume in PDF format. List relevant qualifications (institute/s attended and date/s completed), and include a list of orchestral, ensemble and solo experience (with dates where possible).

The contact details of one professional referee (such as your instrumental teacher).

You must submit your application form prior to submitting your video. Once your form is submitted, you will receive a link that allows you to add your video link (YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox, or Google Drive) to your application. We recommend submitting your application as early as possible to avoid technical complications at the end of the application period.

Please note: The process is different from recent years. Please do not submit your audition videos by email, make sure you upload them to your application as directed in the audition packet and audition form.

3. Audition

First round: Submit a link to your audition video via the link provided after you submit your application. There may be a delay between form submission and receiving your link as we will verify your eligibility before providing you with the link. Do not email your video. Applications are due by 11:59 pm on Wednesday 15 April 2026.

Second round: All applicants will be notified of their result by 8 May. Second round auditions take place live in Sydney and attendance in person is mandatory except in extreme circumstances. Please be sure to read the attendance policy in the audition packet for further information.
