Meet the Music 1

Music and culture: In 2018 we present four unique concerts, each exploring music of a culture or a cultural ritual.

Ideal for students in Years 9 to 12 who are curious about making and listening to music and undertaking the HSC Music 1 course.

Taikoz and the SSO

Taikoz and the SSO

Thu 22 Feb 6:30pm
Meditative shakuhachi and thunderous taiko drums when TaikOz performs with the SSO. Traditional Japanese instruments combine with a Western orchestra in contemporary music that’s primal and utterly extraordinary. Features a new work by Australian composer Lachlan Skipworth.

The Bernstein Songbook

The Bernstein Songbook

Thu 10 May 6:30pm
Leonard Bernstein’s musicals are pinnacle in the musical theatre canon we know today. This concert whirls along Broadway with the absolute best of Bernstein from Candide to West Side Story, On the Town and Wonderful Town. The SSO is joined by three exciting vocal soloists and the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs in music that fizzes with joy, irresistible lyrics and indelible tunes.

Verdi's Requiem

Verdi's Requiem

Thu 21 Jun 6:30pm
Music features in cultural rituals, and Verdi’s awe-inspiring Requiem lends the drama of opera to a deeply personal expression of grief. Most people think of opera when they think of Verdi – Rigoletto, La Traviata, Aida… But among the masterpieces for the stage is an “opera in church vestments”. It follows the shape of a Requiem mass but this powerful and moving music was a public memorial to Italian national hero, the poet Manzoni. Verdi sets the scene with unerring theatrical instinct: heartfelt outpourings of grief, transcendent devotion and – when he reaches the almost primal moment of the “Dies irae” (Day of Wrath) – sheer terror as more than 100 instrumentalists and 120 singers thunder into the hall.

Sinfonia Flamenca

Sinfonia Flamenca

Thu 6 Sep 6:30pm
Flamenco is the centuries-old Spanish sound and spectacle that draws you, irresistibly, into a vortex of romance, anguish and passion wrapped in music and dance. Guitarist Juan Carmona comes to the Sydney Opera House with his flamenco troupe for the first time. Carmona’s group – guitars, double bass, flute, percussion, singer and dancer – will present a dazzling and authentic display of traditional Flamenco, before joining David Robertson and the SSO for Carmona’s colourful Sinfonia Flamenca.
