Professional Learning for Secondary Teachers

Teachers attending the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Professional Learning workshops and seminars have the opportunity to engage with leading music educators, professional musicians, composers and conductors. The Meet the Music seminars are also suitable for Year 11/12 music students.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra is endorsed to provide NESA-Registered Professional Development to the level of Proficient Teacher.

Meet the Music 1: Egypt's Oud and exploring the seasons

This seminar delves into World Music presented in our 2019 Meet the Music series. You will explore Egyptian music and the distinctive sounds of the oud. In the same session you will discover the differing cultural approaches that inform Vivaldi's and Piazzola's sensational depictions of the four seasons.

Meet the Music 2: Composing for the orchestra in the twenty-first century

What are the directions in Australian composition in the 21st century? What are the stylistic differences between the greats of the Classical and Romantic eras and those composing today? This seminar explores the creative impulses and compositional approaches employed by contemporary composers and musicians.

Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is an orchestral classic. This workshop presents ways to encourage students to visualise each movement of a work that is rich in musical imagery.

Nathaniel Stookey’s clever score introduces the orchestra with Lemony Snicket’s text. It's a musical whodunnit created to challenge and delight students.

FOR YEARS 7–8

Long before cats were on YouTube, composers were characterising creatures through music. Challenge your students to consider how sound creates character with this program.

Matthew Hindson composed Dangerous Creatures in response to Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals. Analyse how each composer brings different animals to life through music. Consider the influence of cultural and social context upon the  composer’s compositional style.
