Donald Runnicles conducts Beethoven's Missa Solemnis
Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House
Thu 13 May, 2027, 7.00pm
Sat 15 May, 2027, 2.00pm
Principal Guest Conductor Sir Donald Runnicles joins our celebrations of Beethoven with his Missa Solemnis, the work Beethoven considered his greatest composition.
Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis reaches into the divine. Vast in scale and unyielding in vision, it carries a profound sense of aspiration, moving you between moments of quiet devotion and overwhelming surges of sound as it reaches toward the heavens.
Sir Donald Runnicles grew up listening to his father conduct choirs in Edinburgh. This music is in his blood, and there is nobody better to marshal orchestra, choir and soloists in this powerful expression of human aspiration. This is music that surrounds you with its power and luminosity, transporting you out of the everyday and into a place that is at once monumental and deeply personal.
As Beethoven wrote on the original manuscript, ‘from the heart – may it return – to the heart’.
