What can I expect?

Expect to enjoy yourself! Maybe your heart will beat a little faster. Maybe your hair will stand on end. It’s hard to predict or describe how the vast sound of a symphony orchestra will affect each of us. All we can say is this: be ready to be captivated. Just bring an open mind and engage with the music – close your eyes, watch the conductor and the musicians, or just sit back and let the music take you away.

What do I wear?

Whatever makes you comfortable. Dress up, dress down – there’s no dress code. Our musicians dress up for every performance but you’re free to keep it casual.

When do I clap?

Good question. Most pieces of music are broken up into different ‘movements’, like acts in a play. Usually, people only clap at the end of a piece, so there’ll be silent pauses between movements. But if you’re unsure, our programs give you an idea of how long each piece is. And if you’re still unsure, just wait until the conductor turns around. Or just share your appreciation when everyone else starts applauding.

When should I arrive?

Ideally, arrive at the venue at least 30 minutes before the concert starts. That gives you plenty of time to cloak your bags, grab a drink and find your seats.

I'm running late. What happens now?

Latecomers might be admitted during a suitable break in the performance. Venue ushers will guide you to the first available seats. Please note that not all concerts have a suitable break, so be sure to check the concert page on our website before you arrive.

Can I bring the kids?

Of course! Children are more than welcome, but we recommend ages 12 and up. We perform Family Concerts throughout the year that are perfect for pre-school and primary-ages children. Our Symphony Hour and Classics in the City series are also great ways to introduce older kids to live performances.

Please note, children aged 15 years and under must be accompanied at all times.

Can I take photos or vidoes?

A very popular question. You can take photos on your mobile phone during breaks in the music and at the end during applause. However we do ask that you switch your phone to silent and make sure the flash is off. And if you share it to your socials, tag us in your posts! We love seeing what people have captured.

If you are more of a pro, we kindly ask that you leave the professional and semi-professional camera gear at home and limit yourself to a phone camera inside the venue.
