On The Day

Arrival Time

Doors open 30 minutes before the concert. Please arrive early so everyone can be seated and the performance can start on time. If your school is delayed, call the Sydney Opera House Box Office on (02) 9250 7777.

Getting Here

The Sydney Opera House is a 15-minute walk from Circular Quay. This is the closest stop for public transport via train, bus, ferry and light rail. To view timetable information and ensure your public transport needs can be met, please check the Transport NSW website.

Bus drop off

Buses and coaches are not permitted on the Opera House Forecourt and there is no onsite bus parking at Sydney Opera House.  Schools using large buses and coaches must drop students off on Macquarie Street in the drop off zone. We recommend allowing an additional 10 minutes for walking from Macquarie Street.

Please note for school concerts there are a large number of Schools attending many of whom are traveling by bus, meaning there is a lot of congestion at the roundabout and bus drop off zones. Please plan your trip accordingly taking this into consideration and plan to arrive early to allow for additional time for drop off.

School Bags

School bags are not permitted at the venue. Please ensure the students leave their bags at school. Storage for school bags is not available.

Food and Drink

Food and drinks are not permitted in the Concert Hall. We recommend having lunch and recess breaks outside in the many picturesque sites around the Sydney Opera House including the Monumental Steps, Forecourt or Botanic Gardens. In inclement weather, under the Monumental Steps would be the idea place for students to have their breaks.

Bathrooms

There are three bathrooms that students are able to use. The biggest of these are the Northern Foyer bathrooms which can be accessed via the purple Passageway on the Western side of the Foyer. There are also bathrooms next to the cloak checking facilities on the Concert Hall and Joan Sutherland Theatre sides of the Box Office Level.

Photography

Schools will be notified in advance if photography is scheduled to take place at any of the Schools Concerts. In these instances, it is the responsibility of the school to collect signed Media Release forms from parents and guardians of participating students and to submit them together in a single file to schools@sydneysymphony.com prior to the concert.

If any students do not have permission to be photographed, they must be clearly identified. A member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Learning & Engagement team will be located at the top of the stairs in the Southern Foyer of the Concert Hall to provide stickers for these students. Stickers must be worn throughout the concert to ensure that photographers can easily identify and exclude these students from photographs.

The Media Release form can be accessed here.

Etiquette

Please remind your students to follow concert etiquette. Listen quietly, avoid talking or using devices, and clap at the appropriate times. Due to the new acoustics of the Concert Hall, any sounds made in the Concert Hall are amplified and can be heard on the stage.
