Katlijn Sergeant, originally from Belgium, studied with Carlos Bruneel at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, graduating with high distinction in 2005. She continued her musical development in Amsterdam under Vincent Cortvrint and participated in numerous masterclasses across Europe.
Since 2012, she has held the position of Principal Piccolo with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra in Sweden.
An accomplished orchestral and chamber musician, Katlijn has performed with a wide range of prestigious ensembles, including the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Royal Monnaie Opera in Brussels, Royal Danish Opera, National Orchestra of Belgium, Brussels Philharmonic, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra and I Solisti del Vento.
In addition to her performance career, Katlijn is deeply committed to teaching and to expanding the piccolo repertoire through the commissioning of new works. Since 2017, she has led the Master’s program in piccolo at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. She has also given piccolo masterclasses at renowned institutions such as the Yale School of Music, Stony Brook University, the Boston Flute Academy, the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo and the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen.
Katlijn frequently teaches piccolo at international festivals, including the International Piccolo Festival in Marktoberdorf, the Finnish Flute Festival, and the Nordic Piccolo Festival in Denmark.
Katlijn joined the Sydney Symphony Orchestra as Principal Piccolo in August 2025.
