Growing up in Newcastle, Liam began violin lessons at the age of 7 with Catherine Sheng-Cooper, before moving to Adelaide to undertake tertiary studies with Elizabeth Layton. Whilst at the Elder Conservatorium, Liam performed the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, performed regularly as a casual musician with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and was the recipient of numerous awards; including the Kamala Khurana Scholarship, the Marnie Cowan Scholarship, and the John Robert Mitchell Prize.
At the conclusion of his time at the Conservatorium, Liam commenced lessons with Evgeny Sorkin in Sydney, before beginning studies at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). At ANAM, Liam studied under Zoë Black and Adam Chalabi and had regular chamber mentoring from Sophie Rowell. As part of the ANAM Set commissioning project, Liam collaborated with acclaimed Australian composer Lachlan Skipworth, premiering his Villanelle for violin and piano. Whilst at ANAM, Liam toured nationally with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and performed with the Melbourne, Tasmanian and West Australian Symphony Orchestras. Liam also won the ANAM chamber music prize for his performance of Roger Smalley’s Horn Trio.
