As an organisation – and for so many of you – music is how the Sydney Symphony Orchestra connects with people. It is how we celebrate, how we mourn, how we express feelings that we can’t find the words for.
Recently, our Patron, the Governor of New South Wales Margaret Beazley, approached us with an idea to bring a moment of joy and connection to members of the Bondi and North Bondi Surf Life Saving Clubs. These two clubs were deeply affected by the terrorist attacks at Bondi Beach last year: in the immediate aftermath of the attack, surf lifesavers and lifeguards from Bondi and North Bondi were among the first to respond, providing shelter, first aid and calm amid unimaginable circumstances.
We knew just who to call to turn this idea into something unforgettable – our friends The Cat Empire, for whom joy and connection have long been watchwords.
And so, with the full and enthusiastic support of The Cat Empire, next week we will be holding a special open rehearsal on Wednesday 26 August. We will be joined by around 200 members of the Bondi and North Bondi Surf Life Saving Clubs and their guests. It is our way of recognising their courage and service to the community, and we look forward to giving the members of the Clubs and their families the chance to come together, reconnect and experience the restorative power of live music.
With The Cat Empire’s infectious energy amplified by the full force of the Orchestra, the concert promises to be uplifting, heartfelt and full of life — a celebration of resilience, joy and the bonds that hold our community together.
