Brahms's First Symphony is one of the greats, drawing inspiration from Beethoven. And Mozart's virtuosic Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola gives our Concertmaster Andrew Haveron and Principal Viola Richard Waters a chance to shine.
Not just one of the great debut symphonies but a towering achievement of the Romantic era, Brahms laboured over his First for over twenty years, conscious of the long shadow Beethoven had cast. The result was worth the wait. Conductor Donald Runnicles returns to Brahms’s First as he completes his multi-year journey through the symphonies.
Brahms brings the drama, Mozart the pure delight. His Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola is a grand showcase for two soloists in conversation. Our Concertmaster Andrew Haveron and Principal Viola Richard Waters bring both virtuosity and longstanding musical rapport to one of Mozart’s most elegant creations.
