Donald Runnicles conducts Ravel & Turley
with Sasha Cooke
Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House
Thu 7 Oct, 2027, 7.00pm
Experience the Australian premiere of an instant masterpiece by composer Alex Turley, coupled with the ravishing beauty of Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe Suite No.2.
Australian composer Alex Turley writes music that ‘ranges from pulsating energy to contemplative stasis’ (Limelight).
His song cycle the ocean’s dream of itself intertwines voice and orchestra in a luminous, immersive soundscape that reflects humanity’s fragile place within the natural world. Co-commissioned by the Sydney Symphony and premiered by Sir Donald Runnicles and the ‘luminous’ (New York Times) mezzo soprano Sasha Cooke in the USA, it now receives its Australian debut.
Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe shimmers with elegance. Ravel himself condensed its best moments into two orchestral suites, the second of which brings this concert to a radiant conclusion.
