Kirill Gerstein in Recital
Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House
Mon 20 Sep, 2027, 7.00pm
Kirill Gerstein returns to Sydney with a recital of music by the great German Romantic composers Mendelssohn, Schumann and Liszt.
Kirill Gerstein brings his ‘serious, intelligent and virtuosic music-making’ (The Observer) back to the Sydney Opera House.
Mendelssohn’s Variations Serieuses reveals quiet mastery. Schumann’s Fantasie Op.17 follows, moving from dreamy to desperate and back again.
Liszt somehow evokes all the passion of Wagner’s Isolde’s Liebestod on one piano, but even that cannot prepare you for what comes next: his B minor Sonata, with a symphony’s worth of drama, darkness and grace.
An epic program that saves its most extraordinary work for last.
Kirill Gerstein's performances with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra have been made possible with generous support from the Berg Family Foundation.
