Pierre-Laurent Aimard in Recital
Beethoven and the Avant-Garde
Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House
Mon 1 Nov, 2027, 7.00pm
Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, ‘a brilliant musician and an extraordinary visionary’, (The Wall Street Journal), reminds us how revolutionary Beethoven’s music was.
Beethoven has become so famous it’s easy to forget he was a radical. This program sets out to remind you, with no one better placed to make the case than pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard.
In the first half, selections from Beethoven’s bagatelles are interwoven with Ligeti’s Musica Ricercata. Two composers separated by two centuries, in dialogue.
The second half opens with Stockhausen’s Klavierstück IX. Then the Appassionata: one of Beethoven’s greatest sonatas and proof that, in his own time, he was nothing short of a revolutionary.
