Shostakovich & Prokofiev
25 Years Of The Sydney Symphony Fellows
Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House
Thu 19 Aug, 2027, 7.00pm
Past and present Sydney Symphony Fellows unite to celebrate 25 years of this world-class training program. Roger Benedict conducts two sparkling ‘Classical’ works by Prokofiev and Shostakovich along with a world premiere by Elena Kats-Chernin.
Celebrating 25 years of the Sydney Symphony Fellows, this concert brings together music that revels in wit, clarity and rich orchestral colour.
Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony opens the program with poise and invention. Brisk and elegant, it flows with homage to the symphonic tradition while glowing with Prokofiev’s signature brilliance. From there, Shostakovich’s Ninth turns the mood deliciously on its head – playful, sardonic and edged with mischief. It’s a work of striking conciseness and surprising depth. Full of contrasts and musical innovation, it gives our musicians every opportunity to shine.
With a new work by Elena Kats-Chernin and the energy of the Sydney Symphony Fellowship Alumni, this is a program of arresting musical vitality. Conductor Roger Benedict, for so many years the driving force behind our Fellows program, brings his deep artistry to an occasion worth celebrating.
