Chief Conductor Simone Young conducts Elgar's masterful Enigma Variations and Canadian violinist James Ehnes returns to Sydney to perform Sibelius's Violin Concerto.
Elgar’s Enigma Variations is the quintessentially English masterpiece known to move even the stiffest of upper lips. With Simone Young at the helm, the Orchestra journeys, variation by glorious variation, toward Nimrod – one of the most thrilling moments in the orchestral repertoire.
Sibelius’s Violin Concerto approaches from a wilder, more exposed place. Internationally revered Canadian violinist James Ehnes – ‘a serious, ever perceptive musician’ (The Guardian) – transforms its bleakness into something that burns.
The concert opens with the vivid, salt-lashed scene-painting of pioneering English composer Ethel Smyth’s On the Cliffs of Cornwall.
