Robert Smith

Second Violin

Born in Sydney but growing up near Murwillumbah, Robert began playing the violin at the age of four. During his teenage years, he studied with David Dalseno whilst participating in the Queensland Young Conservatorium programs in Brisbane and completing both the AMusA and LMusA diplomas with distinction.

Robert graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University with a Bachelor of Music in Performance with distinction, studying under Michele Walsh. During his studies he was a member of the Griffith Honours College for outstanding academic achievement and received over a dozen awards for performance excellence, including the Ronald Clifford Davis Prize, the Vada Jefferies Bach Prize, the Basil Jones Sonata Prize and the German Violin Travel Bursary. He was also awarded the Richard Pollett Memorial Award through the Australian Youth Orchestra in 2021.

An avid orchestral performer, Robert has participated as concertmaster of Australian Youth Orchestra programs since the age of 16 and led the flagship orchestra on the 2025 International Tour across the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Australia.

Since moving to Sydney in 2022, Robert joined the Sydney Symphony Orchestra on a tutti first violin contract before being appointed as a permanent member of the second violin section in 2025.

He has also performed with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Omega Ensemble, Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra, Southern Cross Soloists, Ensemble Q and Sydney Philharmonia.
