Echoes of Beethoven
Reflections and Refractions
Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House
Fri 5 Mar, 2027, 11.00am
Beethoven’s enduring power is heard in two works by German composer Jens Joneleit that ‘recompose’ Beethoven’s own music to reveal sounds both new and familiar. And Associate Concertmaster Harry Bennetts shines in the exquisite Romances.
Just as a shift of light can reveal brilliance in a precious stone, this concert shines on Beethoven’s music to reveal new and lesser-known facets of his genius.
The two Romances for violin and orchestra are lyrical, gorgeous gems, with singing lines and absorbing interplay between the soloist and ensemble. The connections between our Associate Concertmaster Harry Bennetts, Simone Young and the Sydney Symphony will illuminate these sparkling works.
Then a new side of Beethoven is heard in two new works by German composer Jens Joneleit. In Sinfonia X he draws on Beethoven’s own sketches for a tenth symphony to imagine what might have been, while Memoria ‘recomposes’ Beethoven’s own music to commemorate the 200th anniversary of his death.
