Young Musicians Workshop

FOR STUDENTS IN YEARS 4–12

Challenge your students to get to grips with a masterpiece by taking a deep dive into the finer elements of a major work. Applications close 11:59pm, Friday 4 July 2025.

This workshop is a three-day event, all three dates must be attended by participants. The dates below indicate the start time of each day. Starting times may change closer to the event.

Our Young Musicians Workshop connects students with the talented musicians of the Sydney Symphony and the 2025 Sydney Symphony Fellows in a series of rehearsals, sectionals and masterclasses designed for intermediate and advanced students. Afterwards, a free concert for family and friends gives your students the chance to showcase their newly acquired skills.

The cost for participation in this event is $180 per student. Families sending more than one child can take advantage of a discounted rate of $150 for each additional child.

After you have submitted your audition application, you will receive an email where you can upload your audition video. Be sure to check your junk folder.

For your own security, select 'unlisted' in the YouTube Privacy settings when you upload your video. This ensures that your video is not public and can only be viewed by those you share the link with.

If you can’t supply your audition video via YouTube, then please contact us to discuss alternatives.

Applications are by audition video. Open to student musicians from Years 4 to 12 (aged 9 to 18) who play the following orchestral instruments to the approximate Grade level or above.

Please ensure that you are facing the camera and your whole instrument can be seen when filming your audition video. Smartphone video and audio quality is acceptable.

For a total playing time of around 3 minutes, perform music of your own choice demonstrating two contrasting styles. This could be all or part of 1 work, or chosen from 2 pieces.

Unaccompanied works are acceptable, as are studies and etudes. In addition to your chosen pieces, you must also play a scale and arpeggio appropriate to your playing level. You may wish to refer to your Grade syllabus or ask your teacher.

Note: If you are applying on two instruments, for example piccolo AND flute, then you will need to submit the above audition requirements for both instruments.

A piece or study of your choice on each of the following: snare drum; keyboard percussion instrument of your choice; and timpani. If you don’t have access to all of these instruments, then please supply examples of your playing on as many of the instruments listed as you can. Total playing time should be at least 3 minutes.

During the workshop, students will participate in instrumental section tutorials mentored by the Sydney Symphony musicians. They will study orchestral parts focusing on aspects of musicianship such as posture, intonation, articulation, ensemble playing and interpretation. The weekend includes a free concert for family and friends.
