The Sydney Symphony Orchestra seeks an experienced Director of Artistic Planning to curate its 46-week annual season of classical and pops symphonic programing, chamber music, educational programming and regional touring.
The Director of Artistic Planning reports to Chief Executive Officer Emma Dunch and works in partnership with Chief Conductor Designate Simone Young AM, whose tenure begins in 2022, Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles, international agents managing a vibrant global roster of guest artists and conductors, and an experienced team of orchestra Artistic Committee members and senior staff colleagues. The Sydney Symphony has a $45m annual operating budget, with 100 permanent musicians giving 120 concerts per year in nine signature classical subscription series to more than 285,000 patrons annually. The Orchestra also has a robust global concert livestreaming program which last year reached viewers in 72 countries, and tours regularly within Australia, Asia and internationally (China, 2017; Europe, 2019).
The Director of Artistic Planning manages a $5m artistic budget and a staff team that delivers the classical subscription season programming, Sydney Symphony Presents pops programming, education and community engagement programming, artistic liaison and international travel and visa administration services, and orchestral library services. The role serves on the Sydney Symphony’s six-person senior staff Executive Cabinet and presents regularly to the Board of Directors and Orchestra committees.
The Sydney Symphony’s main performance venue, the iconic Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, is currently undergoing a two-year, $200m renovation, including $50m in acoustic improvements. The successful candidate will have the potentially career-defining opportunity to collaborate on programming for the Concert Hall’s reopening and the Symphony’s return season in 2022, to be led by Simone Young in her debut season as Chief Conductor. Other performance venues include the Sydney Town Hall (home venue for 2020 and 2021), City Recital Hall and Sydney Opera House Utzon Room (used primarily for chamber music), the brand new $100M Sydney Coliseum Theatre in Sydney’s western suburbs (used primarily for pops programming), and regional theatres throughout NSW on annual statewide tours.
The Sydney Symphony has recently also launched the largest music commissioning project in Australian history, to commission 50 composers for the reopening of the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall in 2022. The composers have been selected and commissioned and the Director of Artistic Planning will play a central role in managing this program’s successful execution, from orchestral workshopping and recording, to international publishing of the scores, to scheduling of the world premiere performances, to global release and promotion of the commissioned works to orchestras worldwide.
Expressions of Interest are cordially invited from suitably qualified industry professionals with at least 10 years’ professional programming experience for orchestras and the willingness to live and work full-time in Sydney, Australia.
