Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2
Romance and Fairy Tales

The solemn procession of bell-like chords which open Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto unleash one the composer’s most emotionally turbulent and accomplished works.

Written from the depths of despair, the concerto was Rachmaninov’s return to writing after three years of composer’s block and hypnotherapy. What was unlocked in this fiercely personal concerto were the fluent melodies, dazzling bravura pianism and symphonic scope we love. Ukranian-Australian virtuoso Alexander Gavrylyuk is every bit the master of this epic concerto, renowned for revelatory Rachmaninov performances.

Cinderella is a sophisticated fairytale ballet in the Russian tradition with Prokovief’s ear-tickling orchestral magic and catchy, off-kilter tunes on full display. Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts a personal selection of dazzling gems from the ballet. The boldness and verve of Barber’s School for Scandal Overture raises the curtain on an evening of high drama.
